4-Day Himalayan Journey to Gosainkunda Lake
Gosainkunda Lake is situated at an altitude of 4,380 meters above sea level in the heart of Langtang National Park. This trek is not just a place of natural wonder but also a sacred pilgrimage for Hindus and Buddhists. It is considered a challenging yet rewarding trek of Nepal, offering stunning landscapes, astonishing views of snow-capped mountains, and vibrant local Tamang and Sherpa culture.
According to Hindu mythology, Gosainkunda Lake was created by Lord Shiva. Legends say that during the Samundra Manthan, Lord Shiva drank poison to save the universe. To reduce the intense heat, Lord Shiva stroked his trident (Trishul) into the mountain, resulting in the creation of the lake. The lake is a significant pilgrimage destination for Buddhists. Buddhists regard Gosainkunda as a holy site, connecting it with spiritual cleansing and meditation. The lake attracts thousands of pilgrims from Nepal and India during the Janai Purnima festival which usually falls during August.
Gosaikunda Lake typically takes 3-5 days depending on your pace. The maximum altitude during this trek is 4,610 meters on Surya Kunda Lake. Surya Kunda is named after the Sun God and is considered one of the sacred lakes in the Gosainkunda area. It also serves as a rewarding stop for trekkers exploring the Langtang region.
Gosainkunda Trek is a moderate to difficult trek due to its high altitude and steep ascents.

Itinerary
Day 1: Dhunche (1,960 meters) to Chandanbari (3,330 meters)
The trek from Dhunche to Chandanbari (Sing Gompa) is a mix of scenic beauty, cultural experiences, and a moderate physical challenge, which makes the starting day memorable. The distance of the first day trek is 9-10 kilometers which typically takes 4-6 hours depending on your pace and breaks. This trail takes you through different villages like Deurali and Dhimsa. Take a long break in Dhimsa enjoying the beautiful Langtang mountain range before the final push to Chandanbari.
Must Do: Buy a Yak cheese from Chandanbari while descending.
Day 2: Chandanbari to Gosaikunda (4,380 meters)
Today's trek takes you through Cholangpati and Lauribina to Gosainkunda. The day is quite challenging with the steep ascents on Lauribina. The distance between Chandanbari and Gosainkunda is approximately 14-15 kilometers, and depending on your pace, it typically takes around 6-7 hours. While ascending from Cholangpati to Lauribina, you can experience jaw-dropping panoramic views of Annapurna, Manaslu, and Ganesh Himal.
Before reaching Gosainkunda Lake, you must explore nearby lakes like Bhairab Kunda and Saraswati Kunda. Stay at Gosainkunda for the day. Many lodges and tea houses are available.
Tip: You can also stay at Lauribina to properly acclimatize your body. Drink plenty of water to hydrate your body.
Day 3: Gosainkunda to Surya Kunda to Lauribina/Cholangpati
Wake up early morning. Start your trek at 4 a.m. to reach Suryakunda before sunrise. The trail starts with a steep ascent leading you to "The Mouth of the Trishuli" (Trishuli ko Muhaan). You have to hike for almost 2 hours enjoying the stunning views of the Langtang Range, Ganesh Himal, Hiuchuli, Manaslu, Glacial Moraines, and Streams.
The pristine frozen water of Surya Kunda with the sun rising over the towering peaks is a surreal experience.
After relaxing for a few hours at Surya Kunda, head back towards the Gosainkunda and start descending towards today's destination, i.e. Lauribina/Cholangpati.
Day 4: Lauribina/Cholangpati to Dhunche
The path descends steeply through rocky terrain, alpine meadows, and thick forests. Approximately, after 6-8 hours, you can reach Dhunche and head towards your next destination. Also, Dhunche offers multiple lodges and hotels to relax after the trek.

Important tips:
- Descend and Ascend slowly & take regular rest breaks to help your body acclimatize.
- Start early, as the weather can be predictable, especially at higher altitudes.
- Carry a first-aid box with essentials like altitude sickness tablets, band-aids, and antiseptics.
- Carry enough cash as the last ATM is at Dhunche.
- Electricity and Solar energy are available throughout the trail.
- Tea Houses and Lodges are available throughout the trail.
- Do not leave any waste. Keep your waste inside the bag.
- Don't disturb the wildlife.
- Protect your face from the cold wind and the sun.
