Chongqing, generally called the Cyberpunk city of the world, is located in the southwest of China. Chongqing is surrounded by Sichuan, Hubei, Guizhou, and Hunan Province. Chongqing is generally famous for 3H's i.e. Hot Weather, Hot Girls, and Hot Pots. But it is also renowned for relaxation. But, the sad fact is, that mostly local and domestic tourists only visit this mystic city. The number of international tourists has significantly increased these years. According to statistics, Chongqing welcomed 22 million tourists on National Day 2024 out of 95 million tourists all over China including Domestic and International. Chongqing is known for its unique mountainous geography and rapid growth as a global tourist hotspot.

Mostly, 4-6 days are required to visit the most important and must-see places in Chongqing. Explore the heart of the city Chongqing Downtown in 1 day. 2-3 days are required to explore the UNESCO Heritage Natural Sites and UNESCO Heritage Cultural Sites. How to Get to Chongqing: By Air, Rail, and Water

Chongqing can be entered and exited by various modes of transportation like Air travel, High-speed railways, and ships.

  • Air Travel: 

Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the world is around 20km far from the city center.

  • Railways:

 Four major railway stations are there to enter and exit from Chongqing. Chongqing Railway Station, North Railway Station, West Railway Station, and Shapingba Railway Station.

  • Waterways:

 A major hub for Yangtze River cruises.

Where to Stay

  • Jiefangbei CBD is itself considered as Downtown and is the bustling commercial and cultural hub of Chongqing. Most recommended to stay here to enjoy the vibrant nightlife. Most attractions like Hongya Cave and Chaotianmen Dock are only 5-20 minutes apart by car.
  • Jiangbei is a place for those travelers seeking modern amenities and a quieter atmosphere. It also has a lot of entertainment options. Jiangbei is home to the Guanyinqiao Shopping Area and provides a cityscape view. It is 5-10 km by car from Yuzhong District. Most attractions like Guanyinqiao Pedestrian Street and Grand Theatre are just 5-15 minutes by car.
  • Nan'an District is in the south of the Yangtze River which provides a quieter stay with great views of Chongqing Skyline. It is 6-8 kilometers from the Chongqing Downtown i.e. 20 minutes drive by car. Most attractions like Nanshan Botanical Garden are 20-25 minutes by car and Yangtze River Cableway and South Mountain Observation Deck are 10-20 minutes by car. Nan'an District is recommended for nature lovers and especially for those seeking panoramic views and peaceful surroundings.

  • Three Gorges: 

415 km (~6 hours drive). Ideal for a 2-day visit. Recommended cruises: Century Cruises and Victoria Cruises.

  • White Emperor City: 

Same distance as Three Gorges; a historical must-visit.

  • Fengdu Ghost City & Shuanggui Mountain: 

Both are approximately 148 km (~2.5 hours drive).

  • Shibaozhai Pagoda: 

A stunning architectural gem (253 km, ~4.5 hours drive).

Best Time to Visit

Almost every month of the year, you can visit Chongqing but Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) can be the best season to visit because the weather is comfortable and to enjoy the vibrant scenery.

  • In Chongqing, it's polite to greet people with a smile and it will be better if you learn basic Chinese phrases like Ni Hao (hello).
