Everest Base Camp (EBC) is one of the most iconic trek destinations in the world. Situated in the lap of majestic Everest, EBC is at an altitude of 5,364 meters. Everest Base Camp offers the grandeur of Mount Everest, the tallest mountain peak on Earth at 8,848 meters. This trek takes you through the Khumbu region and provides breathtaking landscapes and rich Tibetan-Buddhist culture.


EBC offers panoramic views of towering peaks like Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, and of course Everest. On this trek, you can experience the lifestyle and traditions of Sherpa culture in Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, and many more. You will take the trails through suspension bridges, rocky trails, and high-altitude landscapes. It takes you through the Sagarmatha National Park- A UNESCO World Heritage Site, rich in biodiversity offering landscapes and rare wildlife. 


Everest Base Camp Trek typically takes 12-16 days including the rest days for acclimatization. The trek is slightly challenging i.e. not too easy and not too hard. Tea houses and Lodges are available throughout the trails. As it is standing at 5,364 meters, proper acclimatization is crucial to avoid altitude sickness. The trek starts from Lukla and reaches a maximum height of 5,643 meters on Kala Patthar but reaching Kala Patthar is completely optional.

Preparation and Packing


Preparation:

  • Practice uphill walking and weight training.
  • Spend time at high altitudes.
  • Stay motivated as long as long treks and altitude sickness could be challenging.

Itinerary


Day 1: Kathmandu to Lukla (2,860 meters) to Phakding (2,610 meters)

Take a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. Book in advance to secure the seat and the flight could be canceled due to unfavorable weather. After reaching Lukla, trek to Phakding same day.

Day 2: Phakding to Namche Bazar (3,440 meters)

A scenic trek from Phakding includes suspension bridges and uphill climbs towards Namche Bazar.


Day 3: Rest Day at Namche Bazar

Rest and Explore at Namche Bazar to acclimatize your body properly. Namche Bazar is the gateway to Everest


Day 4: Namche Bazar to Debuche (3,820 meters)

Trek through forests and villages with breathtaking views of the Everest.


Day 5: Debuche to Dingboche (4,410 meters)

This trail will be a little tougher than before because of the steep trail through alpine landscapes towards Dingboche.


Day 6: Rest Day at Dingboche

This day is for your body to acclimatize to a higher altitude. Rest and Hike to prepare for the coming days as you will realize the importance of this rest day.


Day 7: Dingboche to Lobuche (4,910 meters)

As you are now over 4,900 meters of altitude, the trails will be tougher from now. You have to trek through moraine trails with astonishing mountain views.


Day 8: Lobuche to Gorak Shep (5,164 meters) to Everest Base Camp (5,364 meters)

Finally, the day has arrived which you have waiting to experience. Firstly, trek from Lobuche to Gorak Shep. Try walking at your pace slowly. Then, trek to the iconic Everest Base Camp situated at an altitude of over 5,300 meters.

Day 9: Gorak Shep to Kala Patthar (5,643 meters) to Pheriche (4,371 meters)

As this day is completely optional to hike to Kala Patthar. Start your trek early at 3 a.m. from Gorak Shep to reach Kala Patthar at 5 a.m. for the mesmerizing sunrise views. After enjoying the sunrise, start descending towards Pheriche.


Day 10: Pheriche to Debuche

Begin the return trek downhill enjoying the panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and Everest.


Day 11: Debuche to Namche Bazar

Retrace your path back to Namche. Now, it's your choice either you want to enjoy Namche again or trek back to Lukla.


Day 12: Namche Bazar to Lukla

Trek your final day to Lukla. You may have to add your stay in Lukla if the weather is unfavorable. 


Day 13: Lukla to Kathmandu

Fly back to Kathmandu and conclude your Journey to Everest Base Camp.


Important Points to consider on this journey:

  • Get travel insurance (eg: World Nomad Insurance) to cover your all expenses if something happens.
  • Get an NCELL SIM Card.
  • Although the Internet facility is available but have to pay an extra charge.
  • Do not climb more than 400 meters to 500 meters in a day.
  • Rest Day after every 600 meters to 900 meters.
  • Lodge and Tea Houses are available throughout the journey.
  • Lodges can be booked on the spot.
  • Dal Bhat is the best meal option for Lunch and Dinner.

  • Lots of variety of food are available but try to avoid non-veg food if you feel quality is not meeting the expectation as it takes long to shipped in higher altitude places.
  • Drink at least 2 liters of water per day.
  • Take DIAMOX to prevent AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) by consulting a doctor.
  • Sleeping bags are a must either you can buy or rent them from Kathmandu.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol and cigarettes. 
  • Don't take symptoms lightly, little breathlessness is normal so acclimatization is important.
  • Carry more cash than you expected to spend. There can be lots of incremental and hidden costs (hot water, charging, WIFI, etc.) And also there is not an option for ATMs.
  • Start early to enjoy the views of the morning skies.
