The Kora Trek around Mount Kailash is truly a transformative journey, one that is mixed with physical and spiritual challenges. Mount Kailash is a spiritual and sacred mountain revered by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bon religion. The trek is 52 kilometers circumambulation of Mount Kailash symbolizing spiritual purification, transformation, and renewal. Preparation:
- The trek is physically demanding with high altitudes and steep terrain. So it's crucial to build stamina and strength through Cardio exercises, Strength training of your legs and core, Uphill climbing, and Long Walks.
- Although you'll be provided oxygen cylinders by the guide, it's essential to acclimatize to avoid altitude sickness.
- Carry energy-rich snacks such as nuts, chocolates, and bars to maintain energy levels.

Itinerary:
Day 1: Kathmandu to Timure, Rasuwagadhi (1,600 m)
Take public transportation or a jeep from Kathmandu to Timure. This journey is almost 120 kilometers long with a bumpy and off-road adventurous ride after Dhunche. Timure is a small border town nestled at an altitude of around 1,600 meters. Explore suspension bridges and the Trishuli River at Timure. Stay overnight on lodges in Timure.
Day 2: Timure to Kyirong Town (2,774 m)
Have breakfast in the hotel early morning. Today, we are crossing the Nepal-China Border. So, get ready to get a permit for immigration which opens at 8 a.m. Nepali time. After a short drive on a bus, you'll reach Kyirong Town, known as Gyirong Town in Tibet. There are lots of Nepali restaurants so try Nepali Dal Bhat Set in cold weather. Explore the Kyirong town, visiting the oldest temple known as Pakpa Monastery which houses the statue of Lokeshwora (Bodhisattva of Compassion), built by King Songtsen Gampo around 1000 years ago.
Day 3: Kyirong Town to Saga Town (4,640 m)
Today, we are going to cross around 180 kilometers which takes approximately 3 hours of bus journey. After having breakfast, try to manage time to stroll around the town to see the morning view of Kyirong. You can also see the primitive Ginkgo Biloba, from the time of dinosaurs. After the journey starts, you can see the waterfall along the journey. Most of the road sections in this journey are in the best condition. During this trip, you'll be crossing many high mountain passes but the recently built tunnel diverts and takes you to the beautiful Tibetan Plateau. After crossing the tunnel, you can see the Pelku Lake at an altitude of around 4,591 meters. After the journey of around 3 hours, you'll reach Saga Town, a bustling town in the Shigatse prefecture of Heavenly Tibet. Explore this vibrant town.
Day 4: Saga Town to Darchen (4,670 m)
Try authentic breakfast options in Saga Town like Rice Porridge, and steamed dumplings. Today is the longest where we have to cover at least 600 kilometers on a 12-hour-long bus journey visiting the holy Manasarovar Lake, Brahmaputra River, and Chiu Gompa Monastery.
Brahmaputra River also known as Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibetan is one of the largest river in the world stretching around 2,900 kilometers originating from the Tibetan Plateau in Tibet (1,600 km in Tibet) and flowing eastward before entering India (900 km) and then Bangladesh (400 km) to form the Ganges Delta.
Lake Manasarovar is one of the most sacred lakes for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bon religion. According to Hindus, Lake is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva. Pilgrims believe that bathing in its holy waters will cleanse them from sins and bring spiritual purification. But, you're not allowed to wash anything in the lake. However, you can fill the bottle with the holy water for blessings. Just above the Lake, there is Chiu Gompa Monastery.
According to Buddhism, it represents a place of meditation and spiritual awakening. The lake is said to be the creation of the god Brahma and symbolizes purity and enlightenment.
According to Jains, the lake holds spiritual importance as it is associated with the teachings of Lord Mahavir.
Bon also considers the lake associated with creation and spiritual power.
Many pilgrims visit Chiu Gompa Monastery to purify their minds and souls before attempting the holy Kora Trek. Chiu Gompa is believed to be the oldest monastery in this region. You can enjoy the bird' eye view of Manasarovar Lake from the Chiu Gompa Monastery.
After reaching Darchen at an altitude of around 4,670 meters, you can enjoy the spectacular sunset view while strolling around the town. In some of the hotels, oxygen is supplied in every room through Oxygen Concentrators.
Day 5: Hike from Darchen to Dirapuk Monastery (5,210 m)
The total distance from Darchen to Dirapuk is almost 13 kilometers, which typically takes around 6 hours depending on your pace. The journey begins with a bus ride from Darchen to Yama Dwar (Gateway of the God of Death). You can see a splendid north face of Mount Kailash from Yama Dwar.
The trek actually begins from Yama Dwar. From now on, we are going to circumambulate Mount Kailash and this process is known as Kora. As we hike up, we can see the river flowing alongside the trail towards the Manasarovar Lake. Hiking on this trail is truly a beautiful and surreal experience. Along the way, we can see lots of rock piling and prayer flags. Somewhere right at the foot of the west face of Mount Kailash, notice a holy stone. According to the Legends, people rest their bodies in a holy stone to cure their backache.
After reaching Dirapuk, you can see the splendid northern face of Mount Kailash, and that's where today we are staying overnight.
Day 6: Dirapuk to Base of Mount Kailash (5,670 m)
According to Legends, the only person who ever scaled this holy mountain is Yogi Milarepa (Tibet's most famous yogi and spiritual poet). The Tibetan name for Mount Kailash is Gang Rinpoche which means "Precious Jewel of Snow". However, it is forbidden to summit the holy Mount Kailash.
Today, from Dirapuk, we are hiking approximately 3 hours uphill and 2 hours downhill. On reaching the base, we can see the divine figure of Lord Shiva giving blessings by the hand and also we can see the secret symbol ॐ (Om). Om is the primordial sound from which the universe was created and is the infinite and ultimate truth of reality.
After spending some time meditating at the base, retrace your step towards the Dirapuk Monastery.
Day 7: Dirapuk to Dolma La Pass (5,670 m) to Zutrulpuk Monastery (4,790 m)
Day 8: Zutrulpuk Monastery to Darchen
Today is the last hiking day of this journey of around 7 kilometers. It is the last day of the Kora Trek around the Mount Kailash. The trail is a downhill hike alongside the river. After reaching the teahouses, it is considered that the Kora Trek is officially ended. From here, you can take a bus ride to Darchen.
From Darchen, you can retrace your route.
