Gokyo Valley Trek Guide: Discover the Gokyo Lakes, Gokyo Ri, and Everest Region's Hidden Gems

Gokyo Valley, situated to the west of Everest Base Camp in the Everest region of Nepal, at an altitude of 4,750 meters above sea level. Gokyo Valley is inside the Sagarmatha National Park and is home to a wide variety of wildlife and plant species with its rich biodiversity. The trek to Gokyo Valley and Gokyo Ri summit takes around 13-15 days depending on the route and pace of the trek. Gokyo offers astonishing panoramic views of the highest peaks like Mount Everest, Mount Lhotse, Mount Makalu, Amadablam, and Cho Oyu. The Gokyo Valley trek is especially done for the Gokyo Lakes, Gokyo Ri, and Ngozumpa Glacier.


This guide provides a detailed guide of the trekking routes via different modes of transportation, altitude challenges, preparation, and practical tips to assist trekkers in planning a safe and memorable experience.

  • Sun Hat
  • Headlamp

  • Lip Balm, Sunscreen, Moisturizer
  • Protein Bars, Energy Bars, etc.


Preparation:

  • Hike regularly to build stamina. Uphill climbs are helpful.
  • Acclimatizing your body is important to avoid altitude sickness.
  • Dress like an Onion (layers).
  • Include Hydration systems, first aid kits, and snacks.
  • Carry a Power bank for your accessories.
  • Carry sunscreen with a high SPF (50+) as well as Lip Balm with SPF.
  • Get Travel Insurance


Gokyo Valley Trek is moderately challenging with a maximum altitude of 5,375 meters (17,576 ft).



Best Season to Visit:

  • Pre-Monsoon (March to May)
  • Post-Monsoon (Late September to December)



Temperature:

Day 

  • ranges from (23 to 25) degree Celsius

Night

  • ranges up to -20 degrees Celsius or even low



Itinerary


Firstly, let's reach Namche Bazaar via different modes of transportation according to your budget, Time, and desired experience.


Via Flight:

Take a flight to Lukla - the most dangerous airport with the shortest runway in the world. Start your trek from Lukla to Namche Bazaar via Phakding. It may take 1-2 days depending on your pace.


Via Road:

Phaplu


You can take a bus or a jeep ride to Phaplu. If you're from Kathmandu, you can take a bus from Koteshwor early at 5-6 a.m. The journey will take around 10-12 hours to reach Phaplu. Stay in Phaplu and start your journey in Bolero (Jeep) 4*4 to Paiya. Start your trek from Paiya to Namche Bazaar via Phakding. This journey will take around 2-3 days depending on your pace.


Via Hike:

Take a jeep ride from Phaplu to Taksindu and start your trek to Namche Bazar via NunthalaKhari Khola, Bupsa, Paiya, and Phakding. This journey will take around 3-4 days depending on your pace.

Now, Let's start from Namche Bazar (3,440 meters)


Day 1: Namche Bazar to Dole (4,038 meters)

Namche Bazar is a small bustling village and also referred as Gateway to Everest. The trail from Namche Bazaar to Dole is approximately 12 kilometers and typically takes around 5-7 hours. The trail ascends gradually from Namche Bazaar passing through spots like Kyangjuma, and Sanasa.


Day 2: Dole to Machhermo (4,470 meters)

The trek from Dole to Machhermo is another scenic trail that is approximately 5 kilometers long and takes around 3-4 hours. The route is gradually ascending passing through Lhabarma and Lhulung area. The path is well marked offering the snow-capped mountains like Cho Oyu, Tawache, and Kantega. You may encounter several wildlife along the trail, including Himalayan Tahr, Musk Deer, and several species of birds like Snow Pigeons, and Eagles.  


Day 3: Machhermo to Gokyo Village (4,790 meters)

The trek typically takes 4-5 hours ascending steadily along the Dudh Koshi River offering a stunning view of Cho Oyu and the Ngozumpa Glacier (the largest glacier in Nepal). The trail is relatively gentle but the terrain changes to rocky as you approach Gokyo. You'll see the Longponga Tsho (first lake), Taujung Tsho (second lake), and Dudh Pokhari (third lake). The Gokyo Lakes are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offer serene, picturesque landscapes.


Day 4: Gokyo Village to Gokyo Ri Summit (5,357 meters) to Machhermo

The trail takes approximately 2-3 hours to ascend and 1-2 hours to descend from Gokyo Village to Gokyo Ri to Gokyo Village. The route from Gokyo Village to Gokyo Ri offers the most astonishing views in the Everest region. Start the trek early before sunrise to catch a glimpse of panoramic views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu from Gokyo Ri. You'll also see the pristine Gokyo Lake and the Ngozumpa Glacier from the summit. This could be the toughest climb due to the high altitude, so pace yourself.

From Gokyo Village, it usually takes around 3-4 hours depending on your pace and breaks. Spending the night at Machhermo allows your body to adjust to the lower altitude because of losing 320 meters of altitude from Gokyo. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.


Day 5: Machhermo to Namche Bazar

The trail involves a significant descent from the high-altitude terrain to the bustling hub of Namche Bazar. Around 6-8 hours of descending and a few uphill, to reach Namche.

After the stay in Namche Bazar, one can choose their mode of transport to return. To take a flight, hike from Namche Bazar to Lukla. To return via road or hike, you must have to retrace your trail. If you got lucky, you could find the jeep at Paiya. Otherwise, from Taksindu, you'll find it for sure.
